Abstract :

The herbaceous plant communities of Kenge serve as a significant source of medicinal plants utilized by local populations. This study aimed to inventory and identify the medicinal plants used in Kenge and its surrounding areas. A descriptive cross-sectional study using a mixed-methods approach was conducted with 100 informants comprising notables, traditional medicine vendors, traditional healers, and household heads selected via non-probability sampling. Field observations allowed for the characterization of the environment and the collection of baseline data using a digital questionnaire administered via KoboCollect; data were analyzed using Excel, Word 2016, and Origin 2026 software. The study identified 45 species belonging to 31 families. Euphorbiaceae was the most represented family (8.9%). Mesophanerophytes (57.8%) and shrubs (40%) dominated the biological spectra, while sarcochores (66.7%) were the predominant diaspore type. Phytogeographical distribution spectra revealed a predominance of Guineo-Congolian species (46.7%). Decoction (52.4%) was the most common preparation method, leaves (36.4%) were the plant part most frequently used, and oral administration was the most cited route (88%). The herbaceous communities studied constitute a significant reservoir of medicinal plants. However, given the threats posed by human activities, there is growing concern regarding the degradation of these ecosystems. Their sustainable conservation is essential in the face of increasing anthropogenic pressuress.
