Abstract :

This study aims to propose appropriate solutions to improve the performance of the pump and turbine at the Kahemba station, where operational deficiencies were observed. The study is based on a comparative analysis of machine operation using manufacturer data and field data collected by the team of plumbers from the association responsible for managing the drinking-water distribution network in the town. Specifically, the study evaluates the flow rates and power of the centrifugal pump and the Kaplan turbine using these two data sources. The results show that the turbine must provide the expected mechanical power to the pump so that it can operate properly and discharge the required flow rate. The analysis of hydromechanical data, particularly flow rate and head, as well as physicochemical parameters, including pH, salts, and iron, was carried out using MATLAB and R software. A physicochemical analysis of the water was also conducted to identify the influence of certain parameters, particularly acidic pH, which may contribute to the rapid degradation of the pump impellers. The samples were analyzed at the central laboratory of REGIDESO according to WHO standards. The results confirm the acidity of Kahemba water, which may explain this degradation. The study recommends regular maintenance and flushing of the penstock to increase the turbine flow rate, the addition of lime to the suction basin to correct the pH, and, where possible, the use of pumps made of materials resistant to acidity.
