Abstract :
This literature review highlights the agroecological role of Brachiaria sp. pastures in sustainable livestock systems in tropical regions. These species produce abundant and consistent biomass, even under water stress, and their dense root systems help reduce nutrient losses, improve soil structure, and enhance deep soil carbon sequestration. Mineral fertilization, particularly nitrogen input, is a key factor in increasing pasture productivity. Trials conducted in Benin show that doses of 100 to 200 kg N/ha optimize biomass production, whereas excessive applications (250 kg N/ha) lead to yield decline. Studies carried out in Brazil and Cameroon further confirm the positive effect of NPK fertilization, with a clear dose response relationship and yields maximized at intermediate to high levels. At the same time, mineral fertilization influences the dynamics of soil organic carbon in Brachiaria sp. pastures. In Brazil, it has been demonstrated that the combination of N K fertilization and liming can achieve higher carbon stocks (up to 223 Mg/ha), whereas silicate agromineral amendments did not show significant effects, likely due to prior soil corrections.
