Abstract :

In sub-Saharan Africa, demographic growth accompanied by rapid urbanisation is at the root of numerous disturbances to aquatic environments. The repercussions of these various disturbances are more strongly felt in the coastal zone than in the pelagic zone. Statistical analysis was carried out on 6 samples and 10 variables (Temp, DO, Cond, pH, Turb, Transp, NH4+, NO2-, PO43- and SiO2) using R software. The results showed that the pH levels recorded exceed the WHO guide value (6.5-8.5) and may pose health risks to humans. The lake water is highly mineralised (electrical conductivity >1000 μS.cm-1), and is an indicator of saline (salty) conditions in the lake water. Ammonium and phosphate were the parameters that showed the greatest inter-station fluctuations, respectively (0.74± 1.13) and (1.26 ± 1.41), while pH (9.34± 0.0647) and electrical conductivity (1165± 6.02) showed almost no fluctuations in our six water sampling sites. This being the case, urgent measures need to be taken to implement integrated and concerted management policies for the lake's littoral zones. This will help to improve water quality and maintain biodiversity, which is concentrated in the lake's riparian zones.
