Abstract :
Sickle cell disease remains a hereditary condition with a significant impact on health in the Democratic Republic of Congo, characterized by high morbidity and mortality, particularly among children. Despite the implementation of the PNLCD, the disease continues to pose significant challenges in terms of prevention and management. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of awareness campaigns conducted by the National Sickle Cell Disease Control Program by analyzing their influence on knowledge, preventive behaviors, and use of screening services. It is based on a secondary analysis of data from the Centre de Médecine Mixte d'Anémie SS in Kinshasa. The data were processed using univariate, bivariate, and multivariate statistical analyses performed with specialized software, including Stata, R-Studio, and ArcGIS 10.2. Associations between sociodemographic characteristics, level of knowledge about sickle cell disease, and prevention practices were examined. The results reveal insufficient knowledge about the disease and low uptake of voluntary testing, particularly during the premarital period. This situation reflects the limited effectiveness of current communication strategies. The study highlights the absence of a structured national awareness and communication policy and recommends strengthening communication efforts, early screening, community education, and the integration of sickle cell disease among health policy priorities in the DRC in order to significantly reduce the prevalence of sickle cell disease in the DRC.
