Abstract :

Introduction: Artisanal mining in the Kambove region exposes miners to significant environmental pollution, particularly heavy metals. This chronic exposure could lead to disruptions in iron metabolism, which is essential for many biological functions. Biological markers such as ferritin, transferrin, and serum iron can be used to assess these potential alterations. Objective: To assess the levels of iron metabolism markers in miners. Methods: The study involved 60 participants, including 30 miners and 30 controls. Blood samples were collected, and the concentrations of the three iron markers were analyzed in the laboratory. Statistical comparisons between the two groups were performed using Student's t-test. Results: The results show significantly elevated ferritin in miners (356.75 μg/L) compared to controls (129.33 μg/L), and significantly lower serum iron (59.43 μg/dL vs. 100.65 μg/dL). Transferrin did not show a significant difference between the two groups. Conclusion: We concluded that environmental pollution in mining areas could negatively influence iron regulation in exposed workers, posing a real public health problem in these environments.
