Abstract :

Peanut is a crop of great importance, widely consumed in the Democratic Republic of Congo. It is attacked by early leaf spot, a fungal disease that causes enormous yield losses. The use of tolerant or resistant varieties is an economical, environmentally friendly, and simple control method for producers to implement in order to reduce the damage caused by this disease. The objective of this work is to evaluate the response of peanut varieties to early leaf spot in Kasangulu and N’Sele. The Kiaku variety showed low AUDPC severity values at both sites (507.4 AUDPC at N’Sele and 564.5 AUDPC at Kasangulu). The varieties Sivi, Nsangu, Cialca, and Kimpese showed lower severity values at Kasangulu. In contrast, the varieties JL24, JL24- 2, Kiaku, and HYQ (cm)14 showed lower severity values at N’Sele. Regarding yield, analysis results indicate very significant differences between varieties at N’Sele (p-value = 0.0005) and at Kasangulu (p-value = 0.0020). The Sivi variety gave the highest yield at Kasangulu (4.13A), and at N’Sele, the highest yield was obtained with the Kiaku variety (2.98 A). Thus, producers should select varieties based on their response to early leaf spot in order to improve yields and increase income.
