Abstract :

This study examines the contribution of informal entrepreneurship, specifically currency traders, to socio-economic development in Kinshasa, particularly in the Masina municipality. In the face of an insufficient formal economy and weak regulatory mechanisms, this informal sector plays a key role in urban economic dynamism. The work relies on a mixed methodology combining quantitative surveys (n=101), semi-structured interviews, focus groups, and participant observations, with descriptive and inferential statistical analysis. The results show that despite the lack of official regulation and the informal taxation practiced by unqualified agents, currency traders generate significant income, contribute to local employment, and participate in the economic resilience of the municipality. The study highlights the need for a clear regulatory framework and supportive public policy. This research enriches the understanding of informal regulation and the dynamics of urban micro-institutions in Kinshasa
