Abstract :
With a view to ensuring sustainable management of the Democratic Republic of Congo's fish diversity, a study was carried out on the organizational characteristics of fishermen in the Pool Malebo (Congo River) fishing zones, Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo. Surveys and interviews were carried out in Kinkole and Kingabwa with 220 fishermen equally distributed over each fishing area. It was shown that 53% of fishermen have no alternative activities; 65% of fishermen are self-employed, while 35% are in associations. In order to apply and comply with the regulatory provision on fishing closures, the fishermen who gave a favorable opinion put forward a number of suggestions, including: identification and registration of structured and independent fishermen, supervision and awareness-raising, job creation, technical and financial support from the government and NGOs, and monitoring of regulations on the exploitation of fishery resources.
