Abstract :

Obstetric fistula is a serious accident that often affects women living in rural areas not fully covered by adequate health care structures. This study aims to explore and analyze the expectations and socio-cultural needs of adolescent victims of obstetric fistula, both before and after surgical repair, in the province of Sankuru. Conducted over a six-month period, from January to June 2024, the survey was carried out in three health facilities in Sankuru: Lodja, Kole and Katako-Kombe hospitals. Thematic analysis was carried out progressively, as data were collected, using manual categorization based on the study variables. Fifteen adolescent girls aged 15 to 18 with obstetric vesico-vaginal fistulas participated in the study. Seven were married, six were separated and two were single. Twelve were or had been in polygamous marriages, while two were in monogamous marriages. Nine were multiparous and six primigravida. All came from rural backgrounds, with no source of income or educational attainment, and all had dropped out of school. Surgical repair of the fistula is a crucial but insufficient step. Beyond physical healing, adolescent girls express profound expectations of social reintegration, often hampered by feelings of exclusion and rejection. Comprehensive care, including psycho-social support and community accompaniment, is therefore essential.
