Abstract :

Five improved tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) varieties (Roma VF, Caraibo, Carioca, Roxana, and Xina) and a local population used as a control were evaluated from June to October 2023 under the agroecological conditions of Ndjili-Brasserie, Kinshasa. This study aimed to compare the agronomic performance of these six genotypes under the trial conditions. A randomized complete block design with four replications was used. Growth and production traits and the overall incidence of disease symptoms were analyzed by analysis of variance. Genotypes significantly affected plant height, number of branches, mean fruit weight, and fruit diameter, but not stem diameter at the collar, 50% flowering time, number of fruits, yield, or overall disease incidence. Xina had the greatest plant height (28.50 ± 2.88 cm) and the highest numerical yield (21.48 ± 9.81 t ha⁻¹), although yield did not differ significantly among genotypes. Roxana produced the heaviest fruits (40.96 ± 3.58 g). The local population had a high number of branches (4.00 ± 0.81 per plant) but produced the smallest and lightest fruits. No genotype was superior across all evaluated traits. Xina nevertheless showed an interesting productive trend under the conditions of this trial; multilocation and multi-season evaluations are required before conclusions can be drawn about its adaptation and performance stability.
